We toured a couple museums this morning. The first was the house of an architect by the name of Soane. Sir John Soane was greatly inspired by be classical architecture and he designed buildings for the Bank of England. He also collected my artifacts of classical antiquity and put them on display in his home. There was so much to see. Things ranged from Hadrain’s Villa(see my previous post of this location)to a sarcophagus of King Seti I.
Next was the British Museum. This museum had many pieces of art that I had studied in my classes in the past. It was neat to see them in person. The Standard of Ur, for example, was much smaller than I imagined. Other goodies to be seen were part of the Parthenon, and the treasures of Sutton Hoo ship burial for a Saxon warrior. All this was great, but my favorite part was the glass canopy that covered the great court of the museum.
After the museums, we took the tube to St. Paul’s Cathedral. The building was clearly inspired by St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. We were able to climb the stairs to the top of the dome and see glorious views of London.
